#YoCuento

At Del Silencio a la Libertad, impact is measured in lives changed and silence broken.

#YoCuento

#YoCuento

Stories are powerful. They show others there is hope. They show there is freedom from the silence.

Join DSL’s bold movement to reform Costa Rica’s judicial and social response to sexual abuse. Every child deserves justice — and you can help make it happen.

In Spanish, Yo Cuento means both “I Count” and “I Tell My Story.”

Each meaning captures the heart of our mission.

YoCuento – “I Count” is a declaration of worth and visibility.

For too long, survivors of sexual abuse in Costa Rica have been treated as invisible — their pain hidden behind social stigma and silence.
The government’s statistics report far lower numbers than reality, but those of us who work in this every day know the truth: sexual abuse affects between 75% and 95% of Costa Ricans in some form, directly or indirectly.

Saying “I Count” is standing up against denial — it is a demand to be seen, believed, and protected.

YoCuento – “I Tell My Story” is an act of courage.

Every time a survivor shares their experience, they help dismantle the silence that allows abuse to continue. Their stories drive change — in communities, in courts, and in the culture itself.
Together, the phrase #YoCuento means more than words — it is both a personal statement and a collective movement.
It says: “I matter, and I speak.”

That is how change begins…

DSL’s #YoCuento campaign is a national movement for change. Beginning with a 12-month pilot project in Hatillo, this initiative brings together educators, psychologists, legal experts, and local government partners to transform how abuse is reported, prosecuted, and healed.
This pilot project aims to create a replicable model for judicial and social reform across Costa Rica — ensuring faster justice, stronger sentencing, and deeper community awareness.

With your support, we will:

  • Train teachers, parents, and community leaders to detect, report, and prevent abuse.
  • Establish a municipal victim care office offering psychological and legal support.
  • Provide specialized training for judges and prosecutors focused on child rights.
  • Launch public education campaigns to challenge cultural taboos and end silence.
  • Collect and analyze data to advocate for national legal reforms and research law change initiatives
